The Bavarian Mountain Hound originates from the original hunting hounds, the ‘Bracken’ which are reputed to have the finest nose for following ground scent. They follow the scent with an exacting determination whilst readily giving tongue hunting as a pack.The most persevering and reliable hounds would be picked to be used on the leash to track / search for the lost track of wounded game. Only the best and most biddable were bred from. By the end of the 18th century, through crossing other similarly related breeds the Hanovarian Hound evolved as it is known today. From 1870 onwards Baron Karg-Bebenburg, Reichenhall, finding the Hanovarian Hound too heavy and cumbersome to deal with the mountain regions, crossed the Hanovarian with the racy and lighter framed red mountain scenthounds. The Bavarian Mountain Hound gained popularity as the classic companion of the hunter ousting other breeds from the mountain regions. It is still very popular in Germany, Austria & Poland as a leashed tracking hound, where it is very jealously guarded as they feel it is their right to maintain the qualities for which it has been bred .
In the late 1980’s a dog and a bitch were bought into the UK. Gradually the breeds usefulness has been recognised with 56 registered with the UK kennel club in 2006. The majority of which are in working homes with deer managers, they have proved a great asset in assisting finding injured deer as a result of R.T.A’s (road traffic accident's).
As a whole they are very loyal to their masters, whilst being naturally wary of strangers. They are also a strong willed single minded hound which is a direct result of their vocational qualities. They are a specialist breed devoted to the tracking and finding of wounded / injured large game. Training a deer tracking hound requires a great deal of determination and commitment from the owner.
